Today the California Supreme Court lifted the ban on gay marriage because it was “unconstitutional”. They said it was the “right to form a family relationship”. This was after voters passed the ban in the previous election period. Since then legislation has been passed to allow gay marriage except it has been vetoed by the Governor Schwarzenegger.
California is now the second state which allows gay marriages. However when disputed legislation is passed in California, it sets a huge precedence for the rest of the country. It will be interesting to see if whether the rest of the country will follow suit with this new legislation. This new ruling by the California Supreme Court will probably stoke the fire for gay and lesbian right’s groups and will probably force other states to comply.
